RESTAURANT REVIEW: Zeerover, the best seafood on the island of Aruba

If eating freshly caught seafood in a casual beachside restaurant while listening to the waves of the Caribbean Sea is your vibe, then you must take a trip to Zeerover in Aruba.

Swordfish sign labeled "Zee Rover" and pirate flag on pole. Heineken sign and mask-wearing notice in English and Spanish outside a building. Sky is blue.
Zeerover in Aruba

Located off the beaten path in Savaneta, past the capital Oranjestad and the Aruba Airport, Zeerover is an island institution and worth the drive from the popular tourist areas.

In fact, Zeerover made my recent list of best Aruba restaurants as the winner in the Best Fish by the Ocean category.

Open from 11am until 12.30am every day except Mondays, Zeerover functions as both seaside eatery and nightclub/bar.

PRO TIP: Arrive as close to 11am as possible to avoid long lines.

Two people stand at a gelato shop counter under a blue awning. Menus and signs are visible. The setting is casual and relaxed.
Ordering at Zeerover in Aruba

Once you get to the front of the line, you choose amongst two types of fish, shrimp and a plethora of sides including fries, tartar sauce and local specialities like pan bati.

Order drinks - either soft or hard - from a second window around the corner and then walk out towards the picnic tables that adorn the water's edge.

PRO TIP: Try to get one of the three tables out on the pier for the best al fresco oceanfront dining. However, there really is not a bad seat in the house.

Zeerover used to be cash only, but now they take credit cards as well.

While you wait for your seafood feast to arrive, gaze out at the pristine Caribbean horizon.

The whole fish is perfectly fried, even if you have to dig for the tastiest morsels in the collar.

My favorite is the fried shrimp.

Zeerover's french fries are divine, and come with a salty flavoring. Bottles of Aruba's special spicy papaya hot sauce also adorn the tables if you are bold enough.

PRO TIP: If you have a car, swim and snorkel at nearby Mangel Halto before heading to Zeerover. The two destinations are less than ten minutes apart.

Have a great holiday on the One Happy Island and enjoy the seafood!
